After years of no progress to develop a movie theater on land it owned in Laveen, Harkins Theatres has abandoned its plans in the southwest Phoenix neighborhood.
But some Laveen residents might prefer the retailer that was announced to take its place.
Karla Scott, Community and Economic Development Program Manager for Phoenix, announced that Target had committed to a new location at the site. The announcement was made at a Laveen quarterly meeting hosted by Vice Mayor Kesha Hodge Washington and Councilwoman Anna Hernandez.
The retailer will be part of Laveen Park Place, a mixed-use development that includes retail, restaurants and housing, located at 59th Avenue and Baseline Road.
Scottsdale-based developer SimonCRE will lead development of the Target site, Scott said, and is expected to break ground next year.
